Haringey Council has launched a renter’s forum, giving tenants the chance to speak out against rogue landlords and poor standards in the PRS.
This will put residents from the London borough in the same room as Haringey council officers, local community organisations, tenants’ rights organisations and others.
The council is taking this step in response to reports from renters who say they are struggling with landlords that ignore requests for repairs, charge “extortionate” rates of rent and fail in other areas of responsibility.
The forum will be convened every three months, with the first taking place on 2nd September from 6pm-8pm. It will be held at George Meehan House, 294 High Road, London N22 8YX.
Haringey Advice Partnership and Justice for Tenants are among the community organisations supporting the project.
“Private renting isn’t working,” said councillor Tammy Hymas, co-deputy leader and cabinet member for housing at Haringey Council.
“For too long private renters in our borough have felt powerless when things go wrong, whether that's dealing with poor conditions or unaffordable rent hikes.
“The forum will help us to identify the challenges facing renters and take action on landlords who are making significant profits but failing their tenants.”
