City of Wolverhampton Council has committed an additional £714,000 of funding to tackle rogue landlords for 2026/27.
This funding has been made specifically in preparation for the Renters Rights Act, which comes into effect from 1st May.
Among other things, this will require councils to take a proactive step in regulating the PRS with a duty to enforce this legislation, investigate breaches and issue civil penalties.
The Act will also expand the council’s investigatory powers, enabling authorised offices to obtain information from landlords, agents, banks and other organisations.
“We recognise there are many excellent landlords in Wolverhampton who provide a very valuable housing offer,” said councillor Steve Evans, deputy leader at the council and cabinet member for housing.
“However, we will not tolerate rogue landlords taking advantage of tenants and we will use powers to investigate and take action, which can include using court injunctions and prosecution.
“There are ever growing demands in this sector, which is why we have taken steps to provide extra funding that will enable the team to protect residents in line with the Renters’ Right Act.”
