Generation Rent publishes Welsh manifesto

Generation Rent has published a manifesto outlining how it wants the Welsh government to support renters following the country’s election in May 2026.

The renters’ advocacy group has focused on three core policies it wants all parties to support: limited rent rises, ending Section 173 evictions and introducing compensation for evicted renters.

Generation Rent has argued Welsh renters face financial strain, using ONS data that revealed the average monthly rent in the country reached £817 in October 2025.

This was 6.7% more than the previous year, a higher increase than was registered in England and Scotland.

The group is also pushing for Section 173 evictions to be abolished, highlighting that these were banned in Scotland in 2017 and recently outlawed in England under the Renters Rights Act.

In addition to ending this uncertainty for renters, Generation Rent wants financial support to be introduced for people in this situation.

Here, the group pointed to internal data that claims the typical private renter household pays £1,543 when forced to move.

“Making sure our rents cannot spiral out of control, that we cannot be evicted on a whim and that we are given breathing space for our next move are ways that we can ensure renters in Wales are safe and secure in their own homes,” added Generation Rent.
