Council halts £475,000 in housing scam clampdown

Hammersmith & Fulham Council has halted £475,000 worth of fraud following a clampdown on sub-letting scams.

The council has caught out 26 scammers in the London borough with 25 properties recovered over the past year by its anti-fraud team.

In one case, a tip was made about an illegal sub-letting of a three-bedroom property in Fulham.

It was revealed the tenant lived on the other side of London and had been receiving rent payments from a family living in the SW6 property.

This tenant gave up the property before going to court due to the evidence against them.

“We will not tolerate people exploiting council homes in this way,” said councillor Rowan Ree, cabinet member for finance and reform.

“Our council homes are there to support residents in genuine need.

“We will not stop in our fight against housing fraudsters as we make H&F a stronger, safer, kinder place."
