Nottingham Building Society names new chief technology officer

Nottingham Building Society has named Russ Thornton (pictured above) as its new chief technology officer (CTO).

Russ initially joined in March 2025 as a strategic adviser in an interim capacity from Shawbrook Bank, where he had spearheaded a multi-year digital transformation.

He replaces Paul Howley, who is departing the firm after three years in the role as its first CTO.

Russ brings 34 years of experience and has held senior leadership positions at Cofunds, Legal & General, Aegon and World Remit.

He will now be responsible for the delivery of Nottingham Building Society’s core banking and mortgage transformation strategies.

“Russ brings deep expertise and a proven track record of delivering digital transformation at pace and scale,” said Sue Hayes, CEO at Nottingham Building Society.

“Since joining us earlier this year, he’s had a great impact, and I know he will continue to do so as he leads our transformation programme.

“We pass our thanks on to Paul Howley for everything he has done during his time with us —  Paul’s legacy is not only the systems and structures he helped deliver, but the culture he helped shape.”

Nottingham Building Society has also confirmed the hire of Aaron Shinwell from Santander UK where he was commercial director (homes).

He will take up the new role of chief lending officer at the building society in August.
