NRLA demands Renters Rights Bill clarity from government

The National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA) is demanding the government provide more clarity about the upcoming Renters Rights Bill and when it will impact landlords.

The NRLA notes that the government previously stated such changes would impact the PRS in the summer of 2025.

However, with the bill not scheduled to be scrutinised by the House of Lords until after Easter, this looks unlikely.

According to the NRLA, almost five million households will be impacted by the bill’s planned end to fixed-term tenancies.

As a result, the landlord advocacy group has argued a minimum of six months are needed to ensure all parties in the PRS can prepare for upcoming regulatory changes.

“The lack of clarity is causing needless uncertainty for both landlords and tenants,” said Ben Beadle, CEO at the NRLA. “It is damaging the rental market at a time when there is already a chronic shortage of homes to rent.

“The idea that such sweeping changes could be made overnight is, at best, wishful thinking.”
