The government’s Spring Statement has been heavily criticised by the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA), described as a “wasted opportunity” for tenants.
Though chancellor Rachel Reeves reaffirmed her commitment to planning reforms and housing delivery aims in yesterday’s (26th March) speech, she didn’t refer to the PRS.
The NRLA has responded negatively, highlighting the need to boost rental supply, support investment in energy efficiency and provide relief for tenants given changes in housing benefits.
According to the Association, there is an average of 12 renters now chasing every available property which means demand is at an all-time high.
Addressing the chancellor’s speech, NRLA CEO Ben Beadle said: “It has done nothing to tackle the chronic shortage of rental housing to meet demand.
“It has done nothing to reform a broken tax system which is failing to encourage and support investment in energy efficiency improvements.
“And it has done nothing to address the unjust freeze on housing benefit which is leaving so many renters fearful of how they will afford their rents.”
