Tenancy advocacy group Generation Rent has welcomed the employments rights bill which it argues will boost renting households.
The bill was introduced last week and includes proposals to ban “exploitative” zero-hours contracts, end “fire and rehire” and introduce basic employment rights and unfair dismissal protections from the outset of a person’s work contract.
Working with trade union UNISON, Generation Rent argues that renters currently lose out to unfair employment practices.
This includes worrying about the threat of eviction, spending too much on rent and living in low standard accommodation.
These, Generation Rent argues, could be alleviated by improvement to employment conditions.
A press release from Generation Rent stated: “The bottom line is that if people have a decent living wage and a decent affordable home to rent, then millions could be protected from poverty, debt, eviction and homelessness.”
Higher wages, better dismissal protections, an end for “fire and rehire”, improved sick pay and a clampdown on zero-hour contracts could all support renter affordability, Generation Rent added.
Though not included in the bill’s current draft, the government has also pledged to introduce legislation to end pay discrimination. This has also been welcomed by Generation Rent.
