Green mayoral candidate proposes to freeze rents in London

Green Party candidate for Mayor of London Zoë Garbett has pledged to launch a rent commission to control rents in London.

Garbett explained that, under rent controls, she proposes to freeze rents for two years in London.

When discussing unaffordable rents in the city, Garbett said: “People are getting pushed out of the city, people like nurses and teachers.

"At the moment, rents are out of control and landlords get to set them mid-tenancy; people are scared of raising issues about repairs because they’re worried their rents are going to be put up.

“Under rent controls, it’s set at a certain level. The rent commission would set that level . . . and then they could gradually be brought down.”

Garbett has been in the Green Party since 2014.

The London Mayoral election will take place on 2nd May.
