Reject rent controls, NRLA urges Plaid Cymru

The newly-elected Plaid Cymru government has been urged to reject rent controls by the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA).

In last week’s elections, Plaid Cymru was the most successful political party in Wales after winning 43 seats.

However, Plaid Cymru is six seats short of an overall majority with Reform UK being the second most successful party in the elections after winning 34 Welsh seats.

At the time of writing, the details of any coalition are still yet to be confirmed.

Ahead of the new Senedd being officially formed, with Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorweth requiring an additional vote to be made first minister, the NRLA has stressed the need to better support Wales’s PRS.

Ben Beadle, CEO at the NRLA, has called rent controls a “disaster” that should be avoided.

“Wherever rent controls have been introduced they have failed and, in this case, would not address the root causes of high rents — the spiralling costs investors face, which are passed on to tenants through increased rents.

“Whatever the outcome of coalition negotiations, we look forward to working with ministers in the next government to ensure Welsh landlords’ concerns are taken into account.”
