PM vows to protect Londoners from rogue landlords

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to protect Londoners from rogue landlords, in an open letter laying out Labour’s ambitions for the capital.

Ahead of the May 7th elections, the Prime Minister published the open letter today in the Evening Standard with the headline: “Keir Starmer: I’ll protect renters in London from rogue landlords.”

In the letter, the Prime Minister highlighted the work being done around leasehold reform to cap ground rents with the aim of improving home ownership among Londoners.

The Renters Rights Act, due to come into effect tomorrow on 1st May, was also covered.

“We said we would stand up for renters — and we have,” wrote the Prime Minister.

“This week, new legislation comes into force that ends no-fault evictions, cracks down on unfair rent hikes, and bans bidding wars.

“The nearly three million renters living in London can now have more confidence in planning their futures without worrying about what a rogue landlord might mean for them.”

Taking aim at other parties, such as the Green Party and Reform UK, the letter criticised the former’s approach to the housing crisis.

Starmer wrote: “They say they want to tackle that housing crisis, but time and time again, they have voted against legislation to do just that.

“And across the country, they have opposed the building of over 42,000 homes, including 13,000 affordable homes.”

The letter ended with a plea to Londoners to vote for Labour candidates at next week’s elections.
