Generation Rent appoints Dame Karen Buck as chair

Generation Rent has named former MP, and author of the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation Action) Act 2019, Dame Karen Buck as its new chair.


Karen was unanimously voted to the role by the board on 4th November.

A Labour MP from 1997 to 2024, Karen has served in both government and the opposition. In government she was transport minister and her shadow cabinet roles have seen her work across education and pensions.

She is currently working in governance roles for regeneration and development projects in London.

At Generation Rent she will work alongside CEO Ben Twomey who said: “The pressures on renters right now are enormous, but so too are the opportunities for change.

“With Karen’s leadership and expertise, I am confident that Generation Rent will continue to persuade governments to improve the lives of renters across the UK.Karen absolutely shares our vision that renting can, must and will get better.”

Karen added: “It’s a privilege to join Generation Rent when renters are so high up the political and media agenda.

“I look forward to working with the brilliant staff team and board to make sure that every renter lives in a secure, quality and affordable home.”
