NRLA calls for changes to tackle rogue landlords

The NRLA is lobbying for additional changes to enable councils to target rogue landlords more effectively, as its latest research revealed that less than half the fines levied against rogue landlords have been collected by local authorities.


According to FOI data obtained by the association, between 2021 and 2023 a total of £13m worth of civil penalties were issued by councils — despite this, just £6m has been collected.

In addition, the report showed that 49% of local authorieis did not issue any civil penalties between 2021 and 2023, while 69% issued just five or fewer.

The NRLA presented its latest research to the All Party Parliamentary Group for the PRS, and is now calling for additional changed to be implemented in the sector to ensure the new legislation coming in as part of the Renters Reform Bill is fit for purpose.
