Renters Reform Coalition criticises landlord MPs trying to ‘water down’ Renters’ Reform Bill

The Renters Reform Coalition has slammed several MPs for their efforts to water down the Renters Reform Bill, despite being landlords themselves.

Of the total number of MPs who have signed amendments for the bill, 14 Conservative members were confirmed to be landlords, according to the latest Register of Members’ Financial Interests as of 5th February 2024.

These Conservative MPs include Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg (with two rental properties), Sir Geoffrey Clinton-Brown (with five rental dwellings), Nick Fletcher and Marco Longhi (both having 10 rental properties each).

The Renters’ Reform Bill amendments tabled by the MPs include proposals to allow hearsay evidence to be used in evictions over anti-social behaviour, and the removal of local housing authorities’ ability to designate areas as subject to selective licensing.

Tom Darling, campaign manager at Renters Reform Coalition, criticised the MPs actions.

“Being a landlord doesn't mean you can't be an MP, but we think it gives you a particular duty to deliver protections for your renter constituents — particularly when you have stood on a manifesto commitment to do just that.

“That these landlord MPs are now choosing to sign amendments to water down, delay or even stop altogether these vital reforms is shocking.”
