MP’s comments about ‘Rachmanite’ landlords deemed an ‘outdated vilification of the modern landlord’

The scourge of “Rachmanite landlords” operating in West Yorkshire was raised in parliament yesterday (25th January) during a Business of the House session — however, the BTL industry see this comment as “hindering the efforts of responsible landlords”.

The House of Commons heard how tenants in West Yorkshire were being "dreadfully exploited" and were experiencing a “miserable life”.

Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman claimed that people in his constituency and up and down the country are being “dreadfully exploited via Rachmanite landlords”.

"They are being given a miserable life, with rack-renting or letting every room in the house as a bedroom.”

“What is going on in the rented sector is a scandal,” he added.

However, some BTL experts see this comment as a gross exaggeration, adding that only a small minority of landlords are guilty of providing poor rental properties and services.

"It's crucial to address the real issues of exploitative landlords and poor housing conditions without unfairly tarring all landlords with the same brush,” said Roger Morris, a private landlord.

“While there are undoubtedly those who neglect their responsibilities, it's essential to recognise the vast majority of landlords who provide safe, quality homes.

“Blanket condemnation only hinders the efforts of responsible landlords and may lead to unintended consequences, such as a decline in available rental properties and a reluctance to invest in the sector,” he added.

Sam Norris, managing director at Grand Union Finance, commented: “This is just another fantastic example of the outdated vilification of the modern landlord, purely for political gain.

“Mr Sheerman, who stated that some properties in his constituency were being rented out, room by room, clearly hasn’t taken the time to look up the meaning of the term HMO.

“The fact he is comparing landlords to a case from the 1960’s only goes to compound the lack of understanding of the industry.

“Until public officials stand up for the rental sector, we will continue to see landlords hung out to dry as greedy fat cats, which any broker who deals primarily with landlords will know, is simply untrue.

“I do hope someone makes him aware of his inaccuracies, as I am sure he would be happy, as a rational public figure, to retract his apocryphal remarks.”
