Watford Borough Council has successfully prosecuted a landlord for failing to carry out repairs on his property and causing severe health risks to his tenants.
Following investigations conducted by the Environmental Health team, it was found that large parts of the property were not safe to be lived in by the family and the three young children under the age of 14.
Improvement notices were issued to the owner of the property and landlord, Mr Smith, and an emergency prohibition order was served by Watford Council to prevent the children’s bedroom from being used until repaired, due to the amount of mould and the danger it posed on their health.
Despite this, Mr Smith was found to have failed to carry out any of the works outlined, thus prompting the council to take legal action.
On 3rd January 2024, Mr Smith attended Magistrates Court where a fine totalling £10,451 was imposed.
“Landlords neglecting their responsibilities will not be tolerated — everyone deserves to live in a safe, warm home," said Peter Taylor, elected mayor of Watford.
“We have taken decisive action to bring some justice for the family involved, but the story is a shocking one and very sad indeed to hear how the children were so badly affected.
“We are doing everything we can in Watford to protect our residents and we will keep protecting tenants in situations like this.
“Watford Council stands firm in its commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of our residents, especially in this case where there were young children involved, the most vulnerable group to be affected by mould spores.”
