Landlords step in to help with utility costs

A recent survey has revealed that landlords are often stepping in to help tenants with the rising cost of utility bills.

Out of the 278 tenants in the survey commissioned by the NRLA and conducted by market research company Dynata, most were renting from an independent landlord or couple, the corporate or company sector, or a letting agency.

The analysis found that only 14% had broached the subject of utility bills with their landlord.

Yet two-thirds of this group stated their landlord provided some practical assistance, including:

• helping tenants access grants to pay utility bills (13%)
• spending money on improving the energy efficiency of the property (20%)
• agreeing a rent holiday/rent window (9%)
• agreeing to reduce the rent enabling the tenant to stay in the property (8%)
• waiving off debt owed (7%)
