Over half of PRS landlords have shown support for a minimum set of standards for properties, according to a report by Paragon Bank.
Of the 500 landlords surveyed, 34% strongly supported the measure, while 28% showed general support.
Some 74% expressed frustration that local authorities did not act against those letting substandard properties in the private sector.
Richard Rowntree, managing director of mortgages at Paragon, said: “The vast majority of landlords have nothing to fear from a Decent Homes Standard, as they are providing a good quality home to their tenants already.
“It’s the minority who don’t meet these standards that are tarnishing the wider reputation of the sector.”
According to the government’s English Housing Survey, the percentage of private rental homes falling under the standard has dropped from around 44% in 2008 to 23% in 2021.
Private sector properties still make up the largest number of non-decent properties.
A Decent Homes Standard has existed for social housing since the early 2000’s, but the government has pledged to introduce it for privately rented property, as part of its proposed Renters Reform Bill.
