Arrest made as HMO vandalism spree continues

Since 5th October, 46 properties have been targeted across Manchester

An arrest has been made as Greater Manchester Police (GMP) continues to investigate incidents of criminal damage against HMOs in the area.

GMP confirmed that a 33-year-old man has been arrested as part of this investigation and taken into custody for questioning.

The force has confirmed enquiries are ongoing, with evidence suggesting that the recent spate of damage is linked to the “criminal exploitation of children”.

Since 5th October, GMP has received 46 reports of criminal damage to properties that are either HMOs, or properties mistaken for HMOs.

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, GMP chief superintendent Marcus Noden said footage of criminal damage was being shared widely on social media "followed by comments and discussions", and people were using social media to "push the message out across different areas".

He warned people to stop the attacks, which he said were "unlawful, reckless and putting lives at risk".

Unverified posts on social media have been widely shared that claim HMOs are being increasingly used to house migrants.

“I want to reiterate that we are taking this spate of damage extremely seriously and are continuing to relentlessly target offenders, including those who we believe are using and exploiting children to orchestrate the criminality,” said Noden in an official statement.

“[So far] three people have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal damage this week — and I hope it sends a strong message that anyone involved in this offending will be made to answer for their actions.

“Our communities can expect to see further action from GMP in connection with this issue.”

Two men, aged 46 and 39, who were arrested on 19th October have since been bailed as enquiries continue.
